Ace Artist in Residence and Powerhouse Arts Present: ELEGY TO THE VOID by Pacifico Silano

Ace Artist in Residence program, curated in partnership with collectives and institutions that inspire us, provides time to think and space to create. Every quarter, we invite artists across the globe to turn one of our hotel rooms into their studio for a month, then showcase the resulting body of work with the Ace community. In May, we welcome the last artist of the 2025 cycle – Pacifico Silano.

Pacifico Silano (b. 1986, USA) is an artist based in New York City, where he graduated with an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2012. Exploring print culture, image circulation, and questions of LGBTQ identity, his work is entirely composed of repurposed fragments from gay pornographic magazines of the 1970s and 80s – an era connecting the progressive legacies of sexual revolution with the advent of the devastating HIV/AIDS crisis.

Rephotographing sections of the magazines, Silano assembles his new images into a range of seductive installations, which often reference the materiality of the publications themselves—honing in on stapled centerfolds, torn sheets, or the faded color palette of printed pages weathered through time. Bringing contrasting details to the fore, from the familiar visual signifiers of an archetypal masculinity, to more romantic glimpses of an overlooked tenderness, Silano points to the tensions that underlie his source material; between harshness and softness, between joy and melancholy, between the liberation of gay communities and their enduring adherence to wider social norms.

Silano’s works have been exhibited in both group and solo shows at the Bronx Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, Museo Universitario del Chopo, Mexico City, The Andy Warhol Museum, The Museum of Sex, The International Center for Photography, Houston Center for Photography, Baxter ST@CCNY, Island Gallery, Light Work, Monti8, Fragment Gallery, and Luis De Jesus Gallery. His work is also found in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).Silano is a past recipient of the Aaron Siskin Foundation Fellowship, the NYFA Fellowship in Photography, and a finalist of the 2013 Aperture Foundation Portfolio Prize. He was shortlisted for the Paris Photo/Aperture First Book Award with his debut publication, I Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine, published by Loose Joints in 2021.

Powerhouse Arts (PHA) is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. The organization offers art fabrication programs for ceramic, print and public art, as well as space for communal education and events. The facility is also
home to MGC Community Print Studio, nonprofit decorative arts fabrication shop The Alpha Workshops, and architectural metal design fabrication firm Workspace11. The building also houses multi-use facilities for education, events, and public engagement.
