Art World Chess with Lauren Cohen
- 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm | Wednesday December 25, 2024
- Lobby | Ace Hotel New York
Lauren Cohen has been producing an ambitious body of work while completing her residency at the Ace Hotel New York.
Her immersion in the art world over the last two years has wielded an array of sculpture, photographs, paintings, drawings and a film that will be open to the public on September 26th. One prominent piece in the exhibition is a large-scale ceramic chess set which is meant to show the various players in her chosen industry. The board displays two different sides: the artist vs the gallery, yet Cohen chose to glaze all pieces to resemble stone.
The public is challenged to a game with the artist in the hotel every Sunday and Wednesday night beginning in the month of October. Chess matches can also be booked by emailing: heygallerina@gmail.com
About –
Lauren Cohen is a visual artist who explores subjects of control, power, sexuality and violence in her work. The forming of “the other” within any given society is at the core of her research. Cohen has produced five graphic novels that depict the trials and travails of a female artist’s journey. Her character grapples with the idea of success and existence. Cohen gathers the content for her work by documenting a constructed life that seems to blur truth and fiction. Her various part-time jobs become direct sources of inspiration. She was formerly a cue card girl for NBC’s Saturday Night Live as well as a Gallerina at an art gallery in Chelsea. @laurencohenstudio
